As challenging as it is for returning service members to join the civilian workforce, finding a job when you are wounded or have a disability can be even more difficult. The International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) is working to change things for the better by providing a unique employment opportunity for injured veterans.
In 2016, IADC and Lloyd’s Register partnered with the Wounded Warrior Project to help veterans with disabilities find work as part of IADC’s WellSharp® training program. The program, which advocates for safe drilling and well servicing practices, requires the use of proctors to monitor students during test taking. IADC staff determined the position was a good fit for injured veterans, who make up a significant portion of the U.S. veteran population.
Close to 4 million veterans are currently living with a service-connected disability.
That number is nearly one-fifth of the total number of veterans living in the United States, and it is worth noting that service-connected disabilities are not limited to physical injury. They may also include depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues stemming from time spent in the armed forces.
Combined with the usual challenges of finding work after discharge, having a disability can make it close to impossible for many veterans to land a job; however, research shows that securing employment is one of the most important things transitioning veterans can do to support their physical and mental health. Opportunities like the proctorship program offered through IADC are a positive step toward helping veterans find meaningful work once they leave the military.
So far, 160 wounded service members have trained with IADC.
In addition, more than 100 individuals have already started working as proctors. The program is ideal for newly discharged veterans dealing with physical and mental disabilities who are not yet ready to join the nine-to-five workforce. Likewise, being a proctor is also a great opportunity for older veterans looking for a change of pace.
