The following is a quick breakdown of the information you should have handy before you call DD214Direct.
- Veteran personal information: Whether you are requesting a copy for yourself or for a family member (as the next-of-kin or legal guardian), we will need the following information about the veteran to help us locate their records as quickly as possible:
- Full name
- Social security number
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Military service branch
- Name, email, and phone number of the requestor
Military service history: We’ll also need to know a bit about the veteran’s military service history (Active, Reserve, or State National Guard), including the year they entered and the year they were released (if applicable).
If the veteran served prior to 1970, we will also ask for their Service Number (it is okay if you don’t have this piece of information). Finally, we will need a mailing address (physical or P.O. box) to send the hard copy of their DD214.
What if I don’t have all of the information?
If you are missing some or all of this information, we recommend doing a quick search of your (or your family member’s) files to make sure you have what you need. If the veteran is deceased, consider talking to other family members or looking through what records they may have available.

How long will it take to get my records?
