Since January 1, 1950, the DD Form 214 has been the primary Report of Separation for members of the United States Armed Forces. Along with providing an in-depth look at a veteran's career and character of service, the DD214 also lists the type of separation and the reason for separation—making it the form most often requested to show proof of service and honorable discharge. Servicemembers are given their DD214 upon separation, discharge, or retirement from active duty, and nowadays most veterans understand the importance of keeping a copy of their DD214 handy to apply for exclusive veteran benefits and opportunities. However, for those who left the service more than a decade or two ago, locating their DD214 can be somewhat of a challenge.
